Our goal in the guidance department is to nurture students so they will grow in their walk with Jesus Christ and follow biblical life principles. The guidance program emphasizes three areas:
Academic development:
Our guidance counselors are always available to help students and parents with academic issues by . . .
- Talking with parents by phone or in person about academic concerns
- Meeting regularly with students who are struggling academically
- Setting up parent-teacher conferences at the request of parents or teachers
- Teaching study skills classes for middle school students
- Discussing with high school students what academic courses they should take and the results of their standardized test scores
- Providing the names of tutors in different subject areas, as needed
College and career development:
The guidance office has many books about college planning, college financial aid, and careers, as well as information about a variety of colleges. Stop by and look through these resources! Information about colleges and financial aid is also posted on bulletin boards near the guidance office. In addition, emails are regularly sent to juniors and seniors and their parents about college and scholarship opportunities.
The high school guidance counselor . . .
- Meets individually with every junior and senior to discuss course selection and college plans
- Teaches an elective class on college and career planning for students in Grades 10-12
- Brings representatives to Red Lion each year from more than 20 different Christian, public, and private colleges to meet with interested juniors and seniors
- Plans an annual parent meeting regarding college financial aid
- Holds a Career Fair at Red Lion every other year (the next Career Fair is in March, 2011)
- Talks with sophomores about the results of the career interest inventory they take in October as part of the PLAN exam
- Meets with freshmen and sophomore classes to discuss college and career issues
Personal development:
- Our guidance staff is also a resource for students with personal problems. If a student needs long-term counseling, we refer school families to Christian counselors who are qualified to address the student's areas of need.
- Counselors periodically lead small groups of students (with parent permission) in discussing issues such as developing self-esteem, dealing with stress, and resolving conflict.
- The elementary/middle school counselor meets regularly with elementary and middle school classes to teach about how to handle bullying and develop healthy peer relationships.
